Why Won't My Sensor Detect That?

Five Object Detection Challenges and How the SICK W4 Solves Them

Published on March 12, 2026

This is one of the most common questions we get: "The sensor should be seeing this object — why isn't it working?"

Many jump to the conclusion that the sensor is broken, but most of the time, it simply isn't tailored to detect that specific object or material profile.

SICK’s W4 sensors are engineered specifically for these challenging anomalies. It is our most versatile miniature photoelectric sensor line. As the only SICK Elite Gold Distributor on the West Coast, EandM carries the full W4 lineup to help you target and secure the correct variant fast.

Here are five common detection challenges we intercept in the field, and exactly how a tailored W4 variant eliminates them:

Challenge 1: Your Object Is Transparent

Clear objects are notoriously tough. Light passes straight through instead of reflecting back reliably, causing standard sensors to miss them completely or false-trigger on background elements.

Common Problem Materials:
  • Glass bottles and pharmaceutical vials
  • PET containers and molded plastics
  • Transparent plastic film and packaging wraps
The W4 ClearSense Solution:

Purpose-built for transparency, these retro-reflective models monitor the exact attenuation (slight dimming) of light beams as clear objects pass. Delivers reliable tracking up to a 7 m range (optimal from 0 to 5 m).

Challenge 2: Your Object Has Holes, Grooves, or Perforations

When a standard sensor's single light spot drops into a cutout, recess, or perforation, it instantly loses the object. This sends an immediate, false "off" signal to your PLC, causing missed counts and nuisance sync faults.

Common Problem Materials:
  • Cut or etched semiconductor wafers
  • Perforated server chassis and enclosures
  • Conveyor grating and mesh tracking
The W4 DoubleLine Solution:

Projects two parallel line-spots simultaneously. This background-suppression sensor holds its logic until both spots clear, maintaining a rock-solid, continuous output from leading to trailing edge without physical workarounds. (Range: up to 150 mm; optimal: 50–90 mm).

Challenge 3: Your Environment Requires Heavy Washdowns

Most standard miniature sensors top out at IP67 ratings. While they can survive basic fluid splashes, they will quickly fail under the extreme pressures, chemicals, and high temperatures of sanitary washdown cycles.

Common Problem Materials:
  • Food and beverage processing lines
  • Dairy, meat, and fluid packaging zones
  • Harsh chemical or routine sterilization cells
The W4 INOX Solution:

Available in complete Wash-Down and Hygienic designs with rugged, smooth IP69K-rated stainless steel enclosures. Available across through-beam, retro-reflective, and diffuse form factors to end constant sensor swaps.

Challenge 4: Your Object Is Glossy or Highly Reflective

Mirror-like finishes reflect light directly back into standard receivers at blinding intensities. This specular reflection over-saturates standard optical receivers, causing them to completely misread or skip the object.

Common Problem Materials:
  • Smartphone displays and glass screens
  • Solar cell arrays and silicon layers
  • Polished or raw machined metal parts
The W4 V-Optic Solution:

Utilizes a V-shaped angled optical path rather than a straight coaxial line. By angling the emitter and receiver alignment, it accurately handles high-glare surfaces without receiver saturation.

Challenge 5: Detecting Sub-Millimeter Objects Through Tight Openings

When tracking tiny targets or shooting through narrow viewports, typical sensor beams bloom too wide at distance. This causes light to bleed onto surrounding framing, or skip miniature features entirely.

Common Problem Materials:
  • Micro-scale PCB surface-mount components
  • Tight optical positioning slots
  • Multi-conveyor arrays with dense side-by-side mounting
The W4 Narrow Beam Solution:

Deploys a pin-point, laser-like LED beam capable of resolving targets down to 0.1 mm. The beam expansion is tightly restricted to a max diameter of just 4 mm, completely eliminating crosstalk or channel interference.

One Sensor Family. Five Solved Problems.

No other miniature photoelectric footprint matches this specific application breadth. That is precisely why the SICK W4 serves as our premier baseline recommendation when production targets present complex, unpredictable surfaces.
