Slat Top Conveyors: What They Are and Why They Matter for Complex Layouts

Published on July 21, 2026 • 3 min read
EandM is an authorized Robotunits distributor for the West Coast.

Facilities often need product to travel on a conveyor that isn't a straight line, is around existing equipment, up to another level, or across a long run without adding a drive unit at every turn. Standard belt conveyors struggle with that kind of path, especially when the curves get tight.

Instead of a continuous belt, the Robotunits Slat Top Conveyor moves product on a chain made of individual, interlocking slats. Because the chain is built from separate links rather than one solid loop, it can bend around tighter curves than a standard belt. A single drive unit can also cover longer distances, instead of needing multiple drives along the run.

The chain links can be replaced individually, so a worn section doesn't require swapping out the whole chain. It's available in a few sizes and speeds, which allows it to be matched to a specific load and layout.

How It's Built

The drive uses a sag design that keeps the slat top chain properly tensioned, and it pairs with a pulley built specifically for moving that chain, which sits flush with the frame rather than sticking out into the layout. The frame extrusion also includes mounting options for sensors, side guides, and stands.

The conveyor can also run on an incline, which supports transport between multiple levels. It supports both indexing and accumulation operation.
